The sourcing standard

Three categories. One rule.

CAT 1

Primary source

The document, the footage, the data, the person who was there. First-hand and in the open.

CAT 2

Direct confirmation

An on-the-record confirmation from a party with direct knowledge, validating the claim.

CAT 3

Independent corroboration

Separate, verifiable reporting that corroborates the claim on its own.

The rule: no claim is published without a CAT 1 source, or a CAT 2 or CAT 3 source validating it. The mainstream doesn't practice that religiously. We do.
